Travel

The best way to reach Ljubljana is by plane. We encourage the participants to explore other options, such as travelling to Ljubljana by train, by bus or by car.

By plane: Ljubljana is best served by Ljubljana Airport (LJU, 30 km). In normal times, the best connections are from Frankfurt, London, Brussels, Paris, Istanbul… From the airport, the city centre can be reached either by bus, airport shuttle (~ 10 €), or taxi (~ 50 €). For more details and booking see Getting here.

Other options include flying to neighbouring airports, such as Trieste (TRS, Italy, 120 km), Venice (VCE, Italy, 240 km), Treviso (TSF, Italy, 235 km), Zagreb (ZAG, Croatia, 150 km), and even Vienna (VIE, Austria, 345 km) or Munich (MUC, Germany, 440 km). Please check ground transportation availability and pricing to Ljubljana before booking the flight (some transfer options are GoOpti or Nomago). Also be aware that reaching Ljubljana from these airports includes border crossings so there may be specific country regulations regarding entry, visa, transit, …

By train: Ljubljana is a regional railroad junction and can be reached by direct trains from many European cities, such as Munich, Vienna, Budapest, or Zagreb. The railway station is within walking distance of the city centre and 2.8 km from the institute.

By bus: Ljubljana can also be reached quite conveniently by intercity buses, such as Flixbus.

By car: Driving on Slovenian motorways requires a e-vignette . You can purchase a 1-week vignette (16 €) or a 1-month vignette (32 €). The vignettes are available online and at petrol stations. Headlights are required to be turned on at all times.

Visa

Slovenia is a member of the Schengen Area. For citizens of many countries therefore a valid passport (or personal identity card for residents of the EU) is sufficient to enter the country. An updated list of the countries, whose nationals must be in possession of a visa before entering Slovenia, is found here.

Participants, who need a visa to enter Slovenia have to request a Letter of Guarantee which will be prepared by the Organising Committee. All the costs regarding issuing the visa are to be covered by the participant.
